Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 within Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse so she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother the power of art as an effective tool for social change. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was social conscience and advised DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced iconic civil rights demonstration across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama led her later on to make a film about The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to look over the residence of one of the jurors of the jury. She was also asked to look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism, and she decided to move towards the publicity business. DuVernay was hired right after college, as an intern at the studio that was small. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. She also started several marketing and lifestyle websites like The Urban Beauty Collective.
